Climbers are plants that do not have enough structural strength to remain free-standing to any appreciable height. Therefore, they always need adjacent supports to climb in order to search for sunlight. Climbers can be divided into four groups, based on their climbing strategies, ecology and morphology: 1. Lianas; woody, thick-stemmed climbers that are able to grow in mature forests and begin life as terrestrial seedlings, 2. Vines; thin-stemmed climbers that begin life as terrestrial seedlings and generally grow in disturbed habitats or at the forest edge, 3. Woody hemi-epiphytes; begin life as epiphytic seedlings with roots later reaching the ground, 4. Herbaceous epiphytes and hemiepiphytes; attached to tree trunks and limbs, usually via adventitious roots. The majority of woody lianas are restricted to tropical forests, while temperate zone forests have only a few lianas and virtually no hemi-epiphytes. It is estimated that 10% of the known 90,000 species of the neotropical flora are climbers. Many climbers are used for their fibers, rubber and edible fruits, to produce food, beverages and handicrafts, and as medicinal and ornamental plants.
